What is a GinaCurl?

The GinaCurl is a modern curl reforming service designed for people who want soft, natural curls without the breakage, scalp irritation, or high maintenance routine associated with traditional chemical curls. Many clients explore the GinaCurl after struggling with dryness, thinning ends, undefined curl patterns, or styles that only look good when wet. Others are searching for a long lasting solution that supports healthy growth, works with their natural texture, and eliminates the need for constant activators or heavy moisturizers. The GinaCurl offers a gentle, customizable approach that protects the hair, preserves the ends, and creates a curl pattern that looks healthy and natural every day.

What Makes the GinaCurl Curl Reformer Different?

For starters, it was created specifically for the unique demands of textured hair. When it came to providing beauty solutions for her textured hair clients, Gina Rivera wanted it all. Something that could reduce frizz and volume, reshape the curls, and actually leave hair healthier than before...without any risk of damage to the hair.  That was a tall order. And because Gina couldn't find what she wanted on the market, she decided after decades in the industry, to create it herself!

It's not a GinaCurl unless your stylist has been trained and certified by Gina Rivera and using official GinaCurl Curl Reformer products.

The GinaCurl is Highly Customizable

The GinaCurl works for all curl types whether you have tightly coiled, kink, curly or loose curls. The GinaCurl can take up to 1 hour to process so we can take our time to customize the curl reformer and address any differences in porosity on the hair. On a GinaCurl retouch, we take our time to protect previously treated hair so that we're only processing new growth. No matter your curl type, you will be able to gain and maintain length with this healthier curl reformation process. There is no breakage at the line of demarcation. With a wash and go style, you will be able to work out, swim, and dance in the rain without having to worry.

Healthy Alternative

The GinaCurl Curl Reformation system, Gina's Straight Variation, and Gina's Thermal Reconditioning are safe, and offer healthy alternatives vs other texturizing treatments. Your hair will hold on to its natural elasticity and will only to be touched up about once or twice a year.  Our technique helps to retain health and length.  Safety begins with our consultation process.  If we know your complete hair history (keratin, henna, perms, relaxers, hair color, home remedies...tell us everything!) we can perform the service without damaging your hair.

A Different Curly Perm

GinaCurl is not a Jherri Curl or Wave Nouveau, nor is it a kitchen relaxer you can do at home! What makes GinaCurl different is the product and the application technique that took over a decade to develop. Because of the active chemicals we use, we have an extended processing time - up to 1 hour. We need that time to apply the Thio Chemical and adapt our technique to your unique head of hair. Sometimes we can use 2 or 3 different strengths of Curl Reformer to address every different porosity level down the hair shaft.

I am black (Afro-Latina, African-American and Caribbean descent) with hair that took many years for me to manage. My hair is fine, but curly (somewhere in the 4 family), and deceptive. Years and years ago when I relaxed my hair, stylists would say I had coarse hair and would use the strongest relaxers. The opposite is true: my hair is fine, very porous and needs a lot of moisture and tender loving care. I went natural for years until I found Gina. I found her on the internet and she is not only incredibly knowledgeable about ethnic hair, she truly cares about maintaining length and promoting healthy hair when using chemicals. I started out with the thermal reconditioning, which gave me incredible results. My hair was never so healthy, shiny and full of body with a relaxer. I wanted a change from the straight look to something that would give me more volume and looser curl. I currently have the GinaCurl. It is a variation of the same products used when getting a Japanese straightening (thermal reconditioning), except Gina modifies the application and process so that my hair is not bone straight. She sets my hair on perm rods and my hair has curl now. It looks like my hair was set on flexi rods. The ends stay curled! I use Jane Carter products and my hair looks great! Gina is an artist!

Shared with permission: It’s been a long year and a half since I’ve gotten my last GinaCurl. During that time, I was involved in a relationship that was physically, mentally, financially, and emotionally abusive. My ex had massive control over my self-esteem and made me believe that I was not beautiful wearing my natural hair, among other things. The fact of the matter though, was that he noticed how good I looked and felt with my GinaCurl. As a result, he would get jealous and violent that people constantly complimented me on my hair. A few months ago when he saw that I submitted a GinaCurl consultation, he stole my bank cards, took my laptop, and pulled hard, until he ripped out a chunk of my hair. That was the last straw! That was the day I decided it was over! Today, I am so happy to be a domestic violence survivor! I was able to go into shelter and seek counseling which has led me to reflect on my life and on the service I received at Hair’s Talent. I share my story with you to let you know that your services mean more to me than just a hairdo. My GinaCurl was my way of feeling beautiful even during my year and a half of abuse and oppression.

When I returned home with my new GinaCurl, my husband took one look and froze. He couldn't take his eyes off me and he even put away the groceries!

Having done extensive research online, desperately searching for a solution to my hair needs, I found a hair care specialist named Gina, at a shop called “Hair’s Talent” all the way in East Haven, Connecticut. Making the decision to travel the distance came after reading about Gina’s history of hair care for all cultures, and she being the “first and only white woman” who cared greatly about the healthiness of the hair of women of color, from the 1970’s until today, from perms to the extinction of Jheri Curls. My first concerns were that this might be the old Jheri Curl of days gone by, but I was intrigued by what I read in her “HISTORY” and seeing the evidence of her work. Gina, a woman who looked at the problems women of color faced with hair loss due to chemical processing, took the time and made the effort to come up with a successful method of maintaining the healthiness of our hair with chemical processing. She, the one and only hair care specialist, created a method that results in beautiful, bouncing, easily manageable and continuously growing hair that lasts for an extended period of time. Why are other women of color making negative references toward a “white” woman who could have chosen to maintain the status quo, but who stepped out of the cultural norm, who CARED, who ANALYZED, who CREATED A METHOD to SAVE OUR HAIR! Gina, at Hair’s Talent is so appropriately named...her “TALENT” for taking care of ALL HAIR is not limited to one culture, but all cultures across the globe from Africa to Europe, from the East Coast to the West Coast we travel to put our hair in the care of this “GIFTED” hair care specialist, Gina, who is now sharing her GIFT with other beauticians. I have chosen the GinaCurl, which is NOT the same as a Jheri Curl or any other curl which I have had! The Gina Curl is a Gina CREATION, and her gift of a style that is beautiful, versatile, healthy, continuously growing, and manageable hair. I can say from my experience that at Hair’s Talent “Black Hair Matters” and we women of color should embrace and not hate this “white” woman who cares about our hair!!!

Frequently Asked Questions About GinaCurl

Who should NOT get a GinaCurl treatment?

«

You are not a candidate for the GinaCurl if you have high lift color, highlights, bleach, relaxer or a texturizer. Some smoothing treatments and amino acid treatments may be another reason for not being able to get a successful GinaCurl from roots to ends. We will determine that in your online consultation.

Can I get a GinaCurl on color treated or highlighted hair?

«

Servicing the GinaCurl on color treated hair is trickier than most people think. This is because the ends are very porous and the roots area is much healthier, so customizing is required. We recommend that only the roots are colored with permanent color and if the ends need to be refreshed, use only a rinse. If you color your hair, please color your hair two weeks before your service. Coloring only the roots at that time. This way we don’t have to deal with virgin roots and then colored hair. If we have only 1 inch of virgin roots we will not be able to address that area with a stronger curl reformer so it will not process completely. Remember peroxide color lifts and semi permanent color deposits. If you want to stay or go dark, there is no need to use peroxide color. To consistently receive fabulous GinaCurls, you must understand the effects of peroxide color with your GinaCurl. Hydrogen peroxide will break some of the internal disulfide bonds found in the cortex of the hair. In a typical hair color process, approximately 10 % of existing disulfide bonds are destroyed. If the hair is damaged because of an over processed color, the hair will be weak, easily broken and gummy or stretchy when wet. This means the client is definitely not a good candidate for GinaCurl. You will need a few protein treatments to mend the cortex layer. We do not recommend highlights with the GinaCurl. There is no way to isolate the hair that is colored from virgin hair. If we do the GinaCurl over highlighted hair we will have to use a weaker formula to protect the colored hair, so the virgin hair will not take a successful curl.

Can I color my hair AFTER a GinaCurl?

«

Wait fourteen days for all types of color, including demi, semi and rinse colors. You can risk the chance of the hair reverting if the hair is colored too soon. We also recommend using a lower volume peroxide to color your GinaCurl and using 1-2 shades lighter than before, when choosing an all over color; because hair colors that are lower in peroxide percentage deposit do not lift lighter.

Can I go from curly to straight and back again with GinaCurl?

«

We know you like to leave your options open but our utmost priority will always be safety and the integrity of your hair. We may advise against treating or retreating your hair under certain circumstances. "It is safe to switch from Gina’s Straight Variation to Gina’s Thermal Reconditioning method and vice versa?" It is generally safe to go from a Straight Variation to a GinaCurl as long as no direct heat has been use. It is generally safe to go from a GinaCurl to a Straight Variation or a Thermal Reconditioning. We will not switch you from Gina’s Thermal Reconditioning to a GinaCurl.

Can I get a GinaCurl if I'm pregnant?

«

Yes, getting a GinaCurl doesn’t appear to be a problem for the health of your baby’s well-being. There are no conclusive studies about the safety during pregnancy of the solution used for the GinaCurl. However, because of the pregnancy hormone changes in the first trimester, we don’t recommend getting the Gina Curl during your first trimester. We also don’t recommend getting the GinaCurl for the first three months of your child’s life, because hormones can cause some client’s hair to be very resistant to chemicals. We caution clients to wait until after nursing. Another thing that most pregnant women are not aware of is, normally the hair sheds quit a bit after birth and sometimes after nursing. It’s generally assumed that the hair does not shed as much during the pregnancy, therefore getting a little thicker. Afterward, the hair returns to its normal thickness, basically shedding off all the hair that didn’t get shed in 9+ months.

Can I get a GinaCurl if I have alopecia?

«

Yes, there is no problem servicing the GinaCurl on someone that has Alopecia.

Can I get a GinaCurl over a curly perm?

«

Yes, we can perform the GinaCurl over other curly perms but we'll need at least 4 inches of regrowth. It's important to understand that only the new growth can be treated. The rest of the hair must be left as is and cannot be manipulated. We will do what we can to liven up the ends but we cannot guarantee the results on the previously treated hair. "Can I get a curly perm after a GinaCurl?" We never recommend touching up your GinaCurl with a curly perm of any kind. Our focus is on safety and our technique won't sacrifice health and length. Don't just take our word for it. We had one of our clients touch up her GinaCurl with a curly perm at a different salon. “It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be.”  She was hoping to save some money but ended up with breakage and her GinaCurl ends became stringy and spongy from over-processing.

Can I get a GinaCurl over a Relaxer or a Texlax?

«

No. The GinaCurl will not process over a relaxer or a texlax, and you can’t preform a texlax or a relaxer over a GinaCurl. The two chemicals should not be mixed. The end results will be damaged, over-processed hair with no curl.
