Why Hair Reverts

"How can hair revert, aren't results supposed to be permanent?" The truth is that certain circumstance may cause the hair to revert back to its previous state. Worse yet, hair could be significantly damaged. These situations are avoidable. Read this to get the best possible results from your GinaCurl Service. Remember, this is a team effort!

Lack of Experience

Stylists who are not experience will not know how to customize your GinaCurl according to your hair’s porosity which will undoubtedly vary around your head. Hair has varying degrees of porosity or resistance along its length, and hair nearest the scalp being more resistant to penetration than hair near the ends. Varying porosity will lead to uneven penetration of the chemicals.

Hair porosity becomes an even bigger factor when it's time to perform a retouch on your GinaCurl. It is very important that you go to an experience Certified GinaCurl Stylist. We do not recommend Certified GinaCurl stylist to service a retouch or any type of colored treated hair unless they have performed at least 25 virgin clients.

Improper Technique

  • Technique matters! Results can be affected if the neutralizing lotion is rinsed too soon or left on too long. Over neutralizing and over processing the hair can change the texture of the hair—permanently.
  • Curl reformer left too long or not left long enough.
  • Improper rinsing, wrong formula, improper application techniques, not following GinaCurl directions.

External Factors

Some factors are out of the stylist’s control. We're bringing these to your attention to stress the importance of your consultation. We ask a lot of questions, not because we're prying into your personal business but because your answers can helps us avoid a bad outcome.

  • Previously bleached/highlighted hair has less structural support, and usually reverts more often than hair that's not color-treated. This is why we ask about your 5 year chemical history.
  • Exposure to the sun's ultra-violet rays can degrade and break the previously altered disulfide bonds and gradually revert hair to its original form.
  • Chlorine is an oxidizing agent which attacks the protein structure of the hair, thereby weakening it and causing loss of elasticity.
  • Clients using anti-dandruff shampoos which are sulfur based will notice their chemically straightened hair revert faster. Anti-dandruff shampoos, baby shampoos and many hair care preparations have the capabilities of breaking the altered disulfide bonds, thereby allowing the hair to revert back to its original state.
  • Anything taken into the bloodstream can usually affect the hair, that includes medication and anesthesia. These may interfere with a straightening service.
  • Certain medications may alter the balance between “spring-like” and “glue-like” proteins, interfering with the formation of disulfide bonds in the hair’s protein structure. The hair may not be rendered completely straight.
  • First trimester of a pregnancy and the first three months after birth are a time of big hormonal changes and your hair may not respond to treatments as it normally would.

Improper Home Care

When you get a GinaCurl service, you have to be aware of the at-home care that is required, and you have to be willing to follow through! We wrote these at home instructions with our decades of experience. They are very specific because we know what works and what doesn't! Without following our instructions for the at-home care and in-salon reconditioning treatments, you cannot expect to achieve 100% of the results.
